Birthday: A vegetarian mom faces facts
Orientation for the students began on my birthday. The kids and I joined in (between naps) on the neighborhood walk, transit pass-buying-tutorial, and pizza lunch. After more napping, we all set off for an invigorating (dark, cold, rainy) walk for my birthday dinner. We ended up at the Fischer Brau--traditional Austrian food. It was packed, we begged a table for two that had a reservation for an hour and ten minutes later. Our table-neighbors shared their space, interpreted the menu, and toasted my birthday with us. The atmosphere was loud and celebratory at every table. No one was just sitting and eating--and no TVs anywhere. I had spinach crepes with sheep's cheese sauce (wow!). Maya and Jarrod had Wiener Schnitzel as large as their faces.
Gabe had the Grille Teller (Grill Plate)- "Just think, this didn't exist for me before, and now it can't not exist." He also loves his apple juice with bubbly water in a pint glass. "It comes in pints?!"
Fun fact: Maya's tiny bottle of water cost more than our beers.
We came home, shared an amazing chocolate bar that was a birthday gift from the students, and fell asleep watching Planet Earth.
The last photo: The kids and kind-student, Annie, continue to attempt the Ikea challenge- putting together a dresser in under a week. I say it counts as homeschooling. :-)

Happy birthday, sweet friend! Sounds lovely, all of it--even the silly IKEA dresser.
