Liminal Spaces
So, I find myself quite happy in liminal spaces. I am visually drawn to passageways, as I guess these photos are beginning to show. I like being in airports and on trains, subways, buses. Here in Vienna, the voice on the bus that announces the next stop and all of the transit options available at the next stop is in the matter-of-fact, limited intonation, German voice of Werner Herzog. Every bus ride feels like I am in a Herzog documentary and not only is something wonderful is about to happen, but this mundane bus ride is also full of meaning---cameras rolling in the silences between Herzog's voice..."Gregor Mendel Strasse. U-bahn 4, 37A,........"
The whole week has been so very in-between. We are all jetlagged, not yet on a schedule, the Wake classes have not begun, and we are constantly learning the city such a way as to suggest that all of this information will be useful in the future....when things setting into routine. I love it. I especially love it because, truly, around every corner is something new to marvel at.
So, the photos:
1. another passageway. 2 and 3 are a on Blut Gasse (Blood Street) where either a famous murder happened between rival noble families, or (more probably I think) the meat market was at the top of the incline. 4 and 5. inside St. Stephansdom, the anchoring and towering church in central Vienna. Maya is sketching and the Jesus's horse hair beard grows and shrinks with the humidity.
6. Me and the 05. 05 was the secret symbol of a resistance movement to the Nazis. People carved this 05 and met here at St. Stephansdom. It's also my birthday date.
7 8 and 9. Contender for my favorite building in Vienna. 10 and 11. I am just copying and pasting from the interweb below, but I love the add with the strong man underneath this clock.

Love these pics.
ReplyDeleteNik! I too love the narrow spaces. These pictures make Vienna look so beautiful and yet not sprawlingly big. Maybe you loved a narrow space in your Nannie's house as I did my single iron bed next to the big bed of my grandparents! I love reading everything...I can hear Werner now.
ReplyDeleteI too like your luminal spaces and the way you are catching the light on your tours.
ReplyDeleteOh how I like the Seuss house, all the colors and the bending and twist look.
